The series of exhibitions ties in with the successful anniversary exhibition Dialog der Generationen from 2009, where 15 artists from the previous program have been invited to choose another artist of a different generation as a new participant, thereby resulting in interesting comparisons. The subject has encouraged some participants to develop a manner of presentation that enables a new perspective on their own artwork. The Kunsthalle Palazzo chose two artists for this new series Dialog to use jointly the rooms for a new presentation and to develop this through dialogue. Both artists are going to be challenged to think about the work of the other. As a result a new access to their own work could arise. Dialog is therefore a double challenge: one with the rooms and another with the dialogue-partner.
The first Dialog brings together Renée Levi (Basel) and Karen Geyer (Zurich / New York) as "duel-or duet-partners". They belong to different generations and their work seems to be very different at first sight: one of the artists represents abstract, expressive painting, while the other artist comes from experimental music, which she transforms in the artistic context to sound installations. Her common aesthetical principle is the gestural and reaction to the surrounding space.
Renée Levi has developed a direct and strong picture language with very reduced means. A painting, which busts the borders of the medium and the picture size and expands over this into the room – not just in her wall works. A painting which takes the body of the viewer and his movements in the room as a reference point. “Her kind of painting reminds me of my experimental music”, writes Karen Geyer during the comparison, as well as: “I try to create a noise with my instruments, that evolves and slowly changes through the outside influences. At first sight it might sound slowly like a repetition, but it is an almost imperceptible change from one form to another – from a status quo in another state. I'm interested in changes, the fact that everything is changing and nothing stays. I can see that also in the works of Renée Levi.”
In the new entrance area of the town hall of Liestal is visible the space-filling wall installation Farbraum 1994/95 by Renée Levi. The exhibition in the Kunsthalle Palazzo concentrates thereby as well on the art history of the town.
